WINDREF leads numerous public health initiatives across the Caribbean, including research on the impact of arboviruses and SARS-CoV-2 on pregnant women and their children, the control of vector-borne and neglected tropical diseases among schoolchildren, and efforts addressing gender-based violence. These initiatives are all aimed at strengthening the health and wellbeing of Caribbean communities.
We are also a regional leader in climate change adaptation and mitigation, hosting the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat Regional Collaborating Centre (RCC Caribbean), the Global Water Partnership Caribbean Regional Office, a regional greenhouse gas measurement, reporting and verification hub, and a PAHO-led Climate Change and Health Center.
In addition, the organization plays a leading role in advancing research ethics through regional training, oversight, and policy development initiatives.
Reach Within
Reach Within is the child health equity initiative of the WINDREF Caribbean Centre for Health Equity (CCHE), providing mental health and psychosocial support to children affected by trauma, abuse, violence, and natural disasters.
Following Hurricane Beryl, Reach Within delivered psychological first aid to children in Petite Martinique, Carriacou, and Grenada, and continues to support long-term recovery through resiliency camps and community outreach initiatives.
Through evidence-based care and community engagement, Reach Within is committed to strengthening the wellbeing and resilience of children across Grenada and the wider Caribbean.
Sports for Health
Healthy children make healthy adults!
Kirani James, Grenada’s Olympic Gold Medalist, is WINDREF’S Sports for Health Ambassador, helping Grenada’s children develop healthy lifestyles through sports. We’ve partnered with the National Schools Sporting Events to launch programs that are exciting to children that will set habits for life that lessen the incidence of obesity, diabetes and hypertension.
Mankind Needs Reefs!
WINDREF has partnered with The Nature Conservancy to restore coral reefs and replant mangroves along vulnerable coastlines in Grenada. These initiatives help protect the coast from the growing impacts of climate change by working closely with local fishing communities, providing training in sustainable and safe fishing practices to support livelihoods, strengthen environmental stewardship, and promote long-term resilience within coastal communities.
Children Grow Towards Kindness
WINDREF’s Center for Child Neurodevelopment trains regional experts to develop and administer culturally appropriate child assessments. The organization also partners with local community health workers to implement programs that build social-emotional connections between caregivers and children.
